 Making

We are inspired by materials and process…..

and find that each technique in the studio opens a new path with it’s own nature and parameters. We make pots by throwing, carving, altering and handbuilding, many times in combination with each other. Often we may arrive at a form through one technique and then continue making it with another, but we enjoy the way that each process allows us to generate ideas and move our bodies in different ways.

Wheel

Our wheels are slow turning…..

whether they be the korean-style kick wheel, hand wheel, or stand-up electric wheel. We are interested in responding to the soft quality of clay and recording the gesture of the hand. Using a slow wheel and soft clay helps us to create this intimate relationship.

 CARVING

One quality of clay is softness, but carving reveals …..

a rough texture and sharper lines in our coarse clay. Sometimes we cut only the foot of a pot, and sometimes we carve the entire pot out of a solid chunk of clay. With this kind of reductive forming we can explore different shapes, patterns, and textures.

 HANDBUILT

Handbuilding opens new realms…..

of decoration possibilities and making pots out of round. Some forms are thrown and altered, others are hump molded or press molded.
